BBC Sport ontology

Photo of goal at soccer match The BBC commissioned Epimorphics to help them develop an ontology for representing sports data for the 2010 World Cup.

The BBC publish news coverage of major sporting events on their web site.  In the past they have found that conventional content management systems impose undesirable limitations on the flexibility of the web pages they construct and limit the richness of the experience they can offer visitors to their site.

To overcome these limitations they used linked data to represent information about the competitions, teams, players and matches of the 2010 world cup and invited Epimorphics to help them develop an ontology for sport.  Epimorphics reviewed their existing data models, provided training in how to develop an ontology and ran a workshop with BBC staff to develop a sport ontology focussing on the 2010 world cup.

The BBC Sports Ontology has been published recently, further details from the BBC are available here. It has subsequently been used to support the BBC's coverage of both the 2012 London Olympics and the 2014 Brazil World Cup
